Joburg Roads Agency budgets R99 million for Region B’s 'relatively developed suburbs'

The “lion’s share” of the R99-million earmarked by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for the city’s Region B will go to repairing “surfaces before they become difficult and expensive to fix”. R37-million of the 2015-2016 financial year’s R69-million capital expenditure budget “will go towards the road resurfacing programme in all the region’s suburbs”‚ a JRA statement said.The remainder of the R99-million overall budget - R30 million – is for “investiture in infrastructure maintenance”.The region includes‚ the JRA said‚ “relatively developed suburbs such as Windsor‚ Albertville‚ Blairgowrie‚ Bryanston‚ Bosmont‚ Coronationville‚ Cresta‚ Emmarentia‚ Greenside‚ Fairlands‚ Hurlingham‚ Florida Glen‚ Langlaagte‚ Northcliff‚ Richmond‚ and Sandhurst”.“The work that we do in Region B is mainly road infrastructure maintenance‚ rather than road construction as such. We proactively attend to potentially problematic road surfaces before they become difficult and expensive to fix‚” explained explained JRA’s acting managing director‚ Mpho Kau.“On a daily basis‚ we carry out road infrastructure maintenance‚ including the maintenance of pavements and footways and of the storm water systems.”Other specific capex items include:- R10-million to repair storm water systems in three areas in the region – Berario (R2.6-million)‚ Fairlands (R3.4-million) and Kelands at the Willows Bird Sanctuary (R4-million);- R8-million will be spent on bridge infrastructure;- R7 million for the repair of a sinkhole in Bryanston;- R6-million to repair a collapsed gabion wall at Carlow Road in Melville; and- R2-million to repair a collapsed culvert at the Auckland Park Country Club. Other expenditure is as follows:Other repairs jobs on the agency’s radar include “the collapsed sections of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit route in Auckland Park; collapsed culverts on Surrey Road‚ at the culvert along Bond and Surrey roads in Ferndale and along Barry Hertzog Road in Parktown; as well as road resurfacing and repairs to reinstate junction boxes along Lange Road in Florida Glen”...
