The rape accused grandson of former president Nelson Mandela is being treated in 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to a report on Friday.

The Star reports that the NPA understands that his PTSD is linked to the case he is facing.

There is some disagreement as to whether he qualified to be treated at the facility - SA National Defence Force spokesman Brigadier Xolani Mabanga  told the newspaper that people related to senior government officials could be treated there, while South African National Defence Union spokesman Pikkie Greeff said they couldn't.

“The hospital is reserved for the SANDF. He would be depriving a service member and their family space for treatment,” said Greeff.

Mandela's grandson was arrested earlier this month for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl at a Greenside bar in Johannesburg. While he admitted to having sex with the girl, he claimed it was consensual and that she lied about her age.

Magistrate Pieter du Plessis granted the 24-year-old Mandela R7000 bail in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.

He also had to report twice a week to Norwood police station while he awaited trial.

However due to his treatment schedule, the accused asked the court to relax his conditions and allow him to report to the Lyttelton police station in Centurion instead.
