Two of the 12 awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from a police station holding cell in Limpopo have been re-arrested, police said.

Monti Shai, who had been nabbed for car theft, and Koketso Nkoana, who was arrested for malicious damage to property, escaped from the Tubatse police cells on Sunday afternoon.

They were found and re-arrested on Monday afternoon, said Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto. The search for the remaining suspects continues.

Six suspects escaped from the Mecklenburg police station's cells and six from Tubatse, Otto said.

In both cases they sawed through the wire mesh roof of the exercise room. Shai and Nkoana are due to appear in court on Wednesday on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
