KZN police make 290 sexual offences, family violence arrests in a month

KwaZulu-Natal police are in celebration mode after making 290 arrests and securing 47 convictions relating to sexual offences, family violence and child protection in just one month.

Late on Tuesday, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units had a reason to “celebrate results achieved during their investigation of various sexual related offences in KwaZulu-Natal”.

Zwane said that from September 1 to September 30, police arrested 290 people for various cases including kidnapping, assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, contravening of a protection order, attempted rape, child abuse, child neglect, child abandonment and statutory rape cases in the province.

He said 47 convictions were secured for those found guilty and 14 life imprisonment sentences were handed down.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the arrests and convictions.
