An aircraft came to a standstill on one of the runways at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Monday, Airports Company SA (Acsa) said.

An anonymous caller told News24 that it was a British Airways Boeing 737 and its main wheel had collapsed.

Acsa spokesperson Colin Naidoo told News24 the aircraft was causing a slight delay of about 15 minutes.

"OR Tambo is currently using an alternative runway to ensure flights are able to leave the airport. For safety and security reasons we will have to close that runway [where the aircraft is]."

At this stage, it was not known how the aircraft came to get stuck on the runway.

He said passengers would need to contact their respective airlines to check on their flight status.
