A 24-year-old man arrested in connection with the killing of the son of Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, was scheduled to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.

Chumani Nqakula was stabbed in the upper body on Saturday in Bezuidenhout Valley while his mother was overseas for work.

Circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately clear.

Chumani's father, Charles Nqakula was previously the minister of defence and later the minister of safety and security. He is currently high commissioner to Mozambique.

Messages of condolences poured in for the Nqakula family, with Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota saying he understood the tragedy that had befallen the family.

"I too lost a daughter in an untimely manner whose death still anguishes me, and I speak from experience of the desolation one feels on the death of one’s offspring," Lekota said.

Chumani Nqakula was 23-years-old.
