Robbers shot and wounded two security guards at St Barnabas Hospital in Libode, the Eastern Cape health department said.

Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said both guards would have to undergo surgical procedures to have the bullets lodged in their bodies removed.

The men were shot in their lower and upper bodies respectively at about 20:00 on Monday night.

They were being chased by two cars and entered the hospital premises for cover.

"According to eyewitnesses a Fidelity vehicle entered the hospital at high speed followed by a Toyota Fortuner, the occupants of the Toyota started shooting at the security guards.

"After the shooting, the attackers escaped in their vehicle," Kupelo said.

Police were called to the scene, but the shooters had already fled.

Kupelo said patients and hospital staff escaped unharmed. Security levels at the hospital had since been "beefed up", he said.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said there was no money inside the Fidelity vehicle.

No arrests have yet been made, he added.
