UWC has descended into chaos according to social media after riot police were called onto the campus to disperse student protesters who were attacking non-protesting students.

Exams were halted on Wednesday at the Bellville, Cape Town, university after fire extinguishers were let off in the Main Hall. Police are now present on campus and have used stun grenades to disperse the students.

It is still unclear what has sparked the latest surge of violence at UWC, but it has seen students attacking fellow students, EWN tweeted.

A News24 reporter is en route to the campus.

One Twitter user said that about 15 students had "beaten up" her paramedic brother.

“My brother-in-law is a paramedic at UWC. He got beat up by 15 protesters earlier... the very people he is employed to assist!” said Lindsay Pietesen.
