At least four people were arrested at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology's (CPUT) Bellville campus on Friday as student protests continued.

The institution announced that all activities, including classes and exams, had been suspended for the day.

Riot police threw stun grenades and questioned students they thought were protesters who were hiding in buildings.

The Tygerberg and Cape Town campuses have also been closed as rumours spread that protesters would head there too, Eyewitness News tweeted.

The CPUT protest comes just days after chaos at the nearby University of the Western Cape, where 15 students were arrested after clashes with police.

Protesters started fires across the campus, broke windows and set furniture alight before a stand-off with police.
