The Free State is the first province in the country to implement scheduled water-shedding across all municipalities.

Here are four things you should know about water-shedding:

• Each municipality saves more than one million litres of water per day thanks to water-shedding.

• South Africa loses more than R7 billion per year in terms of the loss of water.

• While effective in saving water, it impacts on water quality.

• Throughout history, water-shedding was common in European countries.

Water supply in the province is expected to be interrupted between 21:00 and 5:00 every day. A certain amount of water will also be allocated to each household and businesses in the affected areas on a daily basis.

Free State residents in certain municipalities will be fined between R2 000 to R20 000 if they are found wasting water during the province's current drought.

The province had less than 30 days of water supply remaining in its reserves and the misuse of water and failure to adhere to restrictions would exacerbate the situation, Premier Ace Magashule said in a statement.

The statement also said health facilities would be most be affected during the drought.
