A tavern owner was shot and killed on Sunday evening during a robbery and his wife later attacked and killed by members of the community, Limpopo police said.

Colonel Moashe Ngoape said the incident happened in Pharare village outside Tzaneen.

The 60-year-old Phenias Shai was attacked by four armed men who stole a safe containing money and other valuable items.

“His wife took him to hospital, were he died on arrival – when she came back from the hospital she found the community gathered at the scene,” said Ngoape.

Ngoape said the community allegedly accused the wife of being responsible for her husband’s death.

“She was then attacked by some members of the community with stones and bottles until she died on scene.”

No arrests have been made.
