KwaZulu Natal braces for matric parties

As matric students down their pens on Friday‚ police in KwaZulu-Natal have been put on high alert in anticipation of teenage celebrations and parties. With the last matric exam taking place on Friday‚ KZN MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison‚ Mr Willies Mchunu‚ has called on learners to “refrain from drinking and driving” and urging them “to denounce any criminal acts”.In a statement released on Friday‚ Mchunu said: “Usually on this day‚ celebrations marking the end of examination‚ dubbed ‘pens down’‚ are staged across the province and are usually marked by incidents of excessive intake of alcohol and substance abuse including drugs‚ which lead to violence and road accidents.”He has alerted traffic officials‚ municipal traffic officers and the SAPS to be extra vigilant to prevent gatherings that could lead to violence‚ as happened last year near Richards Bay‚ when there were stabbings and road accidents.Traffic police will be on the lookout for learners who illegally drive their parents’ vehicles without driver licenses.He added that the departments were finalising the integrated provincial “Festive Season Safety Plan”‚ which would be tabled at the cabinet next week...
