A man accused of attempting to sacrifice his own child has testified that he has not received his prescribed medication since he was arrested.
The man and his wife, who are sangomas, are accused of wanting to burn and kill their baby in Matsulu as part of a ritual to improve their financial status.
A neighbour heard the child cry when it was tied to a plank and placed on a fire.
Cedric Mkhonto, 29, and his wife, Nelly Jawuki, 25, were arrested on October 16 after being tracked down in Tonga, near the Mozambican border.
"I have not had my medication since my arrest. I urge the court to make arrangements that I receive my medication from Tonga Hospital," Mkhonto told the Matsulu Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
His condition was not divulged in court.
State prosecutor Lazarus Rabothata said the State would consider transferring the accused to a place of custody that has a health facility that can prescribe his medication.
Magistrate Victor Mabunda postponed the case to December 14.
