Three suspects killed in shootout with police at KwaMashu hostel

Three suspects were shot dead in a shootout with police at the KwaMashu hostel in Durban in the early hours of the morning‚ spokesperson for the Kwazulu-Natal department of transport‚ community safety and liaison Sipho Khumal said. He said that various police units had conducted an operation early on Saturday following an investigation into a gang that was involved in the Seven Oaks shootout.“When police introduced themselves at a house in KwaMashu Hostel‚ the suspects allegedly fired at the police‚ triggering a shootout. Three suspects were shot and killed while others escaped‚” Khumal said.Police recovered three firearms while a manhunt was under way for the suspects who fled.KZN MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu praised the police’s reaction‚ saying their actions and bravery illustrated in no uncertain terms that the South African Police Service was more than capable of dealing with brazen suspects and fighting crime in the province.Mchunu reiterated that the police and provincial government had a tight security plan to deal with crime beyond and ahead of the festive season‚ when criminals were “hell-bent on causing havoc”.“As government‚ we totally welcome the intervention and bravery of these police officers. We also condemn the actions of the suspects for firing gunshots at the police officers in an area with innocent community members. Once again‚ we urge police officers to defend themselves against dangerous suspects by any means possible that is within the ambit of the law‚” said Mchunu‚..
