Chinese woman nabbed for bribing SARB official

A 26-year-old female Chinese national who was nabbed for trying to bribe a SA Reserve Bank official with R5.2 million has been remanded in custody till December 4 when she will appear in court again to verify her status as well as for a formal bail application hearing. Tian Tian Wang appeared before the Pretoria Regional Court on Friday following her arrest a day earlier when she offered the bribe to the SARB official in Brooklyn.The SARB official had noticed a suspicious bank account with R27 million which was scheduled to be transferred abroad in contravention of the Exchange Rate Act‚ said police spokesperson Lieutenant Robert Netshiunda.“The money was coming from a dubious company whose registered owner knew nothing about the existence of the company.“The account was subsequently blocked until the suspect managed to find the contacts of the officer who blocked the account and offered him a R5 million bribe so that the transaction could be authorised.“The suspect deposited R4 million into the official’s account and another R1.2 million was paid in cash at a restaurant in Brooklyn‚ where the suspect was arrested and charged with corruption‚” Lt Netshiunda. said...
