An investigation is under way to determine the cause of an accident on Sunday that left 19 dead and and four critically injured in Westonaria, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said.

“The RTMC has sent investigators to the scene of the horrific road crash on the R28 near Jachtfontein,” said spokesperson Simon Zwane. The road has since been closed and motorists have been urged to find alternative routes.

Earlier ER24 paramedics reported that the area was “in chaos” following the collision of a truck and minibus taxi.

“Patients were lying all over the scene,” said the service’s spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

“The taxi apparently rolled multiple times and burst into flames. Patients were ejected.”

A young child was also among the three critically injured people airlifted to hospital.

The fourth person was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries but has been transported to hospital.
