Minister must explain labour broker allegations: Cosatu

Cosatu wants Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant to provide proof of her allegations that some unions were working with labour brokers.

"She needs to substantiate her allegations and if they are proven to be true, we will act to ensure that such levels of hypocrisy are decimated within out ranks," Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali told reporters in Johannesburg on Monday.

"As Cosatu we want to make it clear that we will intensify our campaign against outsourcing and labour brokering."

He said the trade union federation would engage with Oliphant.

Addressing the 12th National Congress last week, Oliphant accused some affiliates of entering into bargaining agreements with labour brokers where they pay or contribute to unions' skill levies.

"You have also partnered with the very same companies using them or labour brokers themselves. You do that as individuals or investment companies on behalf of workers," Oliphant told the congress.

"You have agreed that labour brokers must continue to do work in your organised industries."
