A senior Free State municipal official allegedly killed his wife and then went to visit his parents for the weekend with her body in the boot of his car.

He was caught when two homeless men spotted him burning her body on Sunday morning, police spokesperson sergeant Ian Gaobepe said on Monday.

The 33-year-old man is the African National Congress's (ANC) director of corporate services in the Tokologo local municipality.

“It was domestic related violence that resulted in the man murdering his wife," Gaobepe said.

The incident happened in their home in Langenhoven Park in Bloemfontein on Friday evening. The man allegedly pushed his 26-year-old wife against the wall where she hit her head and then collapsed.

Gaobepe said the man put her body in the boot and drove to his parents’ home in Winburg, Free State.

“[He] spent the weekend at his parents’ home while the body was still in the car. However, early on Sunday morning, he decided to drive his wife to the dumping side and burned the body.”

However, two homeless men noticed the man “burning something” and inspected it after he had driven off.

“When the two got to where the fire was, they found a body. They informed the police and gave us a description of the man and the car – one of the garages nearby assisted the police with [closed circuit television] footage that helped us realise it was the man. We found him hiding at a township house and arrested him,” he said.

Gaobepe said the couple had one child.

The man was expected to appear in the Winburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
