The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned motorists they would be arrested on the spot for traffic offences this festive season.

CEO Advocate Makhosini Msibi told journalists that officers would be exercising zero tolerance and that motorists would be arrested for the following offences:

• Driving without a license;

• Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs;

• Failing to wear a seatbelt;

• Using an unroadworthy vehicle;

• Using an unregistered vehicle or having an expired licence disc;

• Exceeding the speed limit;

• Overtaking on a barrier line;

• Driving though a red traffic light;

• Not having number plates on each end of the vehicle.

Msibi said they would not be issuing any summons's or ticket slips to offenders.

All offenders would be arrested when caught.

"Make no mistake - we are going to be arresting people. We have gone beyond a chapter of issuing a summons.

"Any vehicle that is unroadworthy, we are going to be arresting the driver. Without a driver's licence, we are not going to issue out a summons... we are going to arrest you."

He said these measures were taken because they noticed offenders were not deterred by traffic fines.

Msibi said, so far, a total of 8 000 people had been charged for failing to wear seatbelts and 10 000 vehicles had been found to be unroadworthy.
