Cosatu takes up the cudgels for dismissed workers
The Congress of South African Trade Unions will step up its campaign to have imprisoned workers in Mpumalanga released and reinstated in their jobs. According to the federation‚ the workers embarked on a strike on November 4‚ demanding that their union be recognised by their employer. They were arrested on Monday after police attacked them during a crackdown.Cosatu announced on Wednesday that the workers had been “brutalised” by the police‚ and that their employer had hired “scab labour” to replace them and refused to reinstate the workers.Cosatu is calling on Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza to intervene‚ and is planning a march against the employer‚ who the federation says has failed to respond to demands made by Cosatu.“The employer's intransigent and blatant undermining of the constitution of this country and its laws‚ points to sheer arrogance and racist attitudes of the farming community of this country. We will not allow these overconfident farmers to do as they please.
