Gauteng's education department has vowed to act against independent schools after four of them got pass rates below 20%.

"These are schools that operate in little corners. We are going to deal with those schools decisively," department head Edward Mosuwe told reporters in Johannesburg.

He said the province had managed to close the gap between the performance of schools in the poorest areas and those in wealthier suburbs.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said that of the country's top performing 10 districts, seven were in Gauteng.
