Workers embark on strike at Tshwane universities and colleges
Thousands of cleaning‚ gardening‚ security and other outsourced workers at universities and colleges in Tshwane began strike action on Monday as part of the #outsourcingmustfall campaign. The workers are demanding immediate permanent employment as well as a R10‚000 rand per month minimum wage and full benefits.They are also demanding an end to retrenchments and permanent employment for all recently retrenched workers.“Throughout November and December‚ in the wake of the victorious student movement‚ outsourced workers at colleges and universities across Tshwane have held mass meetings and organised themselves into the #outsourcingmustfall campaign alongside outsourced workers from Tshwane municipality and government departments in the city.“At a mass meeting on Saturday 9 January held in Burgers Park‚ Tshwane‚ the workers committees resolved to begin a campaign of action on Monday 11 January‚” the workers said in a statement...
