A fire at the Rynfield substation in Benoni in the early hours of Friday morning caused power cuts in a number of areas on the East Rand, the Ekurhuleni municipality said.
Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after the fire broke out, spokesperson Themba Gadebe said.
"At this stage we are investigating the circumstances of the fire. We will have more details as the day progresses."
The areas affected included Northmead, Ebotse, Crystal Park, Morehill, Putfontein, Brentwood Park, and Fairleads.
"Our engineers are working very hard to determine the extent of the damage in order to begin with the repairs, so that they'll be able to restore the power supply to the areas."
