A man tried to flee a Moot filling station without paying for his petrol - but his getaway was cut short when he crashed into a pole-barrier.

According to the Record Moot, ambulances and police were called to the Van Rensburg and Paul Kruger streets at midnight on Saturday.

The driver had lost control of his vehicle when he tried to race away from the scene without paying for R450 worth of petrol.

According to Xander Loubser, spokesperson for Best Care ambulance services, the rain probably helped thwart his criminal ways.

The driver wasn't injured, so police have taken him to Wonderboompoort police station.

This isn't the first time this month that thieves at a garage have been thwarted by bad driving, as last week a pair of thieves tried to rob a woman in the Glen Acres Shopping Centre - only to land their car on top of a wall.

Their victim slapped one of them.
