Thousands arrested for drinking, drugs over festive season

A total of 29 077 people were arrested for being drunk in public while more than 12 000 were arrested for public drinking over the festive season, MPs heard on Thursday.

The highest number of drug and alcohol related arrests were made in the Western Cape, followed by Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane told Parliament’s police portfolio committee.

He was presenting the results of Operation Festive Season to MPs. It started in October and would end on Sunday.

So far 62 095 people had been arrested for drug-related crimes nationwide.

Police arrested 4774 people for rape, 645 for sexual assault, and more than 500 for kidnapping.

A total of 1 965 undocumented foreigners were arrested in border control operations. 

The police confiscated 1700 goats and sheep, 727 cattle, and 116 other animals during their operations.

On average, 20 940 police officers were deployed nationally each day during the operation.
