Police suspect a body that washed ashore at Gordon's Bay in Cape Town may be that of a missing teenager who disappeared on Sunday.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) responded to a request by the South African Police Service to help search for a 17-year-old boy that went missing at Melkbaai in Strand.

“Police had exhausted all options in a land search for the missing teenager and it was feared that he may have gone swimming earlier and may not have returned...,” the NSRI said in a statement.

NSRI Gordon’s Bay launched a sea rescue craft and dispatched a sea rescue vehicle. A rescue squad from the health department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) joined the search but no sign of the missing teenager could be found.

The search was suspended in the early hours of Monday morning. But, shortly after that, the body of a male washed up on the beach.

An inquest docket has been opened.
