She took to the stand in the Johannesburg High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge, saying she was shocked when she came home from work on a Sunday afternoon and was told by her daughter what her son had done.
"My daughter, Kelebogile, informed me of the incident. As I was still listening to her, a police officer by the name of Mr Khubeka came over. He came to inform me about what had happened.
"I did not believe it because since Donald was born, it was the first time in his life that he was arrested. I don't even recall neighbours coming over to bring complaints about him. That is why I am still shocked even at this moment," Elizabeth Sebolai-Selekane said.
She broke down and cried as she spoke.
Her son who had his legs shackled looked briefly at her before looking at his feet and wiping his eyes.
Dressed in a chequered cream and brown shirt, he then looked up and watched as his mother continued with her testimony.
Sebolai-Selekane had been ill since her son's arrest and was on medication for stress. After collapsing at her home, doctors also informed her that she had clots in her lung, which made it difficult for her to breathe.
She and her son had been the only two people providing for their family.
She claimed her son was a good person who assisted the community in various outreach projects that stemmed from his popular gospel show.
The father of three also supported his kids, Sebolai-Selekane said.
Surprisingly however, she battled to remember the name of her youngest grandchild.
Prosecutor Elize le Roux then questioned Sebolai-Selekane on whether she approved of Sebolai's actions of assaulting women.
She replied by saying she knew nothing of these assaults as her son had lived alone in a flat in Jabulani. She however, did not approve of violence.
Sebolai was convicted of murdering his lover, Dolly Tshabalala in that same flat in June 2014.
He stabbed her in the pelvic area, severing an artery which led to her bleeding to death in his bed.
The once esteemed local DJ then disappeared and was found after an intensive police search lasting more than a week.
He has maintained that he did not kill Tshabalala and that she was stabbed as the pair of them wrestled over a knife which she had used to stab him in the fingers.
By the time the police caught him however, the wounds had healed and were hardly visible.
