Three helicopters, 55 firefighters and 15 vehicles were battling a veld fire in Koeberg on Tuesday afternoon, the City of Cape Town said.

"We are going to stay throughout the night, into the early hours tomorrow as well," Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne said.

There was currently no danger to any property. The fire had destroyed a 12km strip of vegetation along the R27 since noon, he said.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said the Koeberg power station was not affected by the fire as it was a distance away. The station's visitor's centre was evacuated due to the smoke in the area, he said.

There had been concerns about the fires under transmission lines, but these were extinguished and power supply was not affected.
