Durban student who committed suicide WAS granted funding: NSFAS

The National Student Financial Aids Scheme says financing had been granted to the Durban University of Technology (DUT) student who allegedly committed suicide‚ and not rejected as purported by fellow students. Lindelani Myeza‚ who had registered as a first year student in the Faculty of Management Sciences at DUT‚ fell to his death from a university residence on February 12‚ according to reports. He became a rallying cry for students demanding funding for their tertiary studies on social media‚ with the hashtag #IAmLindelani.Spokesperson Kagisho Mamabolo‚ commenting on allegations that NSFAS had declined his application for funding‚ said in a statement: “NSFAS can confirm that at the time of his sad death‚ Mr. Myeza had applied for funding‚ and was successfully funded based on the NSFAS Means Test. Subsequently‚ he was allowed to register for the 2016 academic year.”DUT yesterday suspended its academic programme for the second time this year‚ in the wake of widespread student protests on its campuses.
