Mixo Khoza, from Enzani Primary School in Matsulu, said she was summoned to her principal office and was told to leave the school or get a brush-cut.

Khoza said that when she enquired what the problem was she was told that she looked like a boy and this would influence her to become a lesbian”.

The impoverished girl said the principal also asked her why she was not wearing school shoes.

“I told her I took them to shoemaker because they were broken.

Her mother, Queen Khoza, 36, was shocked regarding the principle’s behaviour.

"I sell vegetables to make sure all my children are at school, but now I feel like my child is intimidated,” said Khoza.

The school principal, Nonhlanhla Mabuza, declined to comment on the matter.

"I am not going to give a comment about this matter, please refer questions to the department of education," said Mabuza, before hanging up.

Provincial department spokesperson Jasper Zwane said they will investigate the matter.
