An alleged armed robber is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court this week following a heist at a store which resulted in the death of an accomplice on Saturday.

The man is accused of being one of five suspects who hit the Dehial Fashion store in central Johannesburg at midday on Saturday, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said in a statement on Sunday.

“It is alleged that five suspects entered the shop pretending to be customers. Two of them jumped over the counter and demanded money,” Mbele said.

“One [suspect] with a firearm was standing next to the door while his accomplices were taking money, also from customers.”

After an employee screamed for help, the robbers fled the shop with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“Community members gave chase [and] apprehended two suspects. They recovered a firearm with no serial number and live rounds.”

The two suspects were severely assaulted before the police “came to their rescue”.

They were taken to hospital by ambulance under police guard. One of the suspects, aged 27, died in hospital.

Three of the robbers remain at large, Mbele said.
