NWU denies student death

The North West University on Wednesday denied claims that a student had been shot dead during clashes with security guards at its Mahikeng campus.

"Those allegations are untrue. That is totally untrue," said university spokesperson Koos Degenaar.

"Had there been a death at the campus, I would have known about it," said Degenaar.

Police could not be immediately reached for comment.

It was understood that clashes between security guards and the students began shortly after the campus's new Student Representative Council (SRC) was appointed in the Great Hall.

Some students later took to Twitter to share that security officials had used live ammunition to disperse the students.

"We have more than 5 students shot with live ammo now in hospital," tweeted one person.

Others tweeted messages of condolences for the student they claimed was killed during the clash.

"It was going to get to this point soon. RIP to #NWU student murdered by the university security for demanding education. sad," another tweeted.

Degenaar however, maintained that security guards had only used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the protesters.

Pictures of bleeding individuals, said to have been part of the clashes at the university, were circulated on Twitter.

One man could be seen bleeding from his forehead, while another was shown lying on the ground, face down with blood splatters around him.
