TUT shut as more protests hit campuses

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) said it had suspended its academic programme at the Soshanguve North and South campuses following renewed protests by students.

Meanwhile, a scuffle broke out between two groups of outsourced workers who were protesting at the institution's Pretoria campus. Five people were taken to hospital, TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter said.

Activities at the Pretoria campus were continuing as normal. Campus security and police were monitoring the situation.

Protests started on both Soshanguve campuses on Monday afternoon after talks between management, police, and student leaders about the resumption of classes reached an impasse. The protest spread from the North to the South campus.

Violence erupted earlier in January when students wearing SA Students Congress T-shirts attacked protesting workers outside the university campus.
