Government welcomes sentencing of former DJ Donald Sebolai

The government has welcomed the 20-year prison sentence handed down to former radio DJ Donald Sebolai on Friday by Judge Cassim Moosa at the Johannesburg High Court. “Government is pleased that the sentence matches the seriousness of the crime‚” said acting Cabinet spokesperson‚ Phumla Williams.“Too many women are dying in the hands of their partners. As government we are doing all we can to ensure that this comes to an end. The Bill of Rights guarantees everyone a right to life.“Government is pleased that the sentence matches the seriousness of the crime. This serves as a deterrent to other perpetrators and it is a clear demonstration that the law will take its course in ensuring that those who commit crime are brought to book‚” Williams said.“The month of March has been declared Human Rights Month. It is our view that this sentence sends a strong message to those who continue to commit acts of violence against others.“As government‚ combating crime and the scourge of women and child abuse is a priority. Through Legislation as well as the 365 Days Campaign Against Abuse of Women and Children‚ government continues to educate society about the rights of these vulnerable groups‚” Williams added...
