Three men are in a serious condition in hospital after they were shot and wounded while sitting in a field in the Crown Mine area, south of Johannesburg, on Friday night, paramedics said.

When paramedics arrived on the scene they found the three lying on the ground with gunshot wounds in their legs, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

The men were in a serious condition. They were treated at the scene and taken to Helen Joseph Hospital.

"One of the patients later told paramedics that they had been sitting in the field cooking when a man approached them and apparently opened fire," he said.

The motive for the shooting was not known.

Gauteng police could not immediately confirm the incident.
