Six children died about four kilometres from Tsomo in the Eastern Cape on Saturday when their minibus taxi overturned while they were on their way from a sport event in Engcobo, the Eastern Cape provincial government has confirmed.

Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the six were declared dead at the scene.

One child was taken to Cofimvaba Hospital in a serious condition by emergency medical services, while others who were injured in the accident were transported by private vehicles.

Tall grass and adverse weather conditions made it difficult to determine if there were any more casualties at the scene.

“The school kids from Nqamakhwe Senior Secondary school [were] coming from Engcobo Zwelivumile High School [from a] sports activity,” Kupelo said.
