Members of the Durban Dog Unit noticed a group of three men trying to steal a car in Esther Roberts Road, followed them, and pulled them over.

While an officer was searching the occupants of the car, one drew a toy gun and pointed it at the officer, who drew his own weapon and shot the man.

The wounded suspect got back into the car and sped off, before losing control and crashing into a house.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the man's two alleged accomplices, aged 29 and 35, were arrested. They would face charges of attempted theft of a motor vehicle. An inquest docket was opened.
