Southbound traffic volumes recorded at the N3 Toll Concession’s De Hoek Plaza near Heidelberg peaked between 5 and 6am with 1520 vehicles passing through the booths.
This declined steadily towards noon with 1180 vehicles counted between 10 and 11am.
In contrast‚ the Mooi River toll gate in KZN saw 570 cars passing through in the direction of Durban between 5 and 6am‚ but this had increased 1590 in the 10-11am time block.
Two other plazas along the N3 Toll Concession’s (N3TC) route –Wilge in the Free State and Tugela in KZN - posted steady traffic volumes in the early thousands throughout the morning.
Northbound traffic volumes recorded by the N3TC were almost consistently half that of southbound traffic though its plazas at the reporting intervals for the morning.
Conditions on the road appeared favourable‚ with the concessionaire only issuing one weather alert for the morning‚ when‚ just after 8am‚ it said mist was causing “poor visibility between Van Reenen and Montrose”.
