A man wanted for a spate of crimes in KwaZulu-Natal was killed in a shootout with police in central Durban on Thursday night.

Another was arrested and would appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said on Friday.

Police had sought the pair for several crimes in the Mpumalanga district of the province, including the murder of a 40-year-old man on Thursday afternoon.

Zwane said while detectives were processing the murder scene in Mpumalanga, they received credible information that those responsible were in the Durban CBD.

When they got there, they approached a blue Golf 7 with two occupants in Margaret Mncadi Avenue. The occupants allegedly opened fire and police retaliated.

“They fatally wounded one suspect and the second one was arrested. Two unlicensed firearms were recovered from the vehicle,” Zwane said.
