Two dogs attacked the alleged criminal when he entered the property. On Wednesday, Western Cape police confirmed the 37-year-old man was admitted to hospital, where he died.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the SPCA said the second pit bull involved in the attack was brought to the organisation for a full clinical examination.
“We have no reason for any concern with regards to the dog's physical welfare,” the SPCA said.
They were “extremely saddened by this traumatic incident in which both human and animal life was lost” and would, with the dog’s owner, investigate the attack to ensure the act had not been contravened.
A bystander apparently shot the dog.
In the footage circulated on social media, the dogs repeatedly maul the man as witnesses try to chase them away using rocks and sticks.
An inquest docket into the man's death is being investigated.
