Returning holiday traffic on the northbound N3 highway between Durban and Johannesburg is expected to peak at 2700 vehicles per hour on Monday.“Significant resources are being deployed” to cope with high traffic volumes that‚ said the N3 Toll Concession’s (N3TC) Miles le Roux‚ will last from 9am to 9pm on the public holiday‚ and taper off late on Tuesday.The “N3TC Route Patrol team‚ traffic authorities‚ the SA Police Service‚ ambulance - and other emergency services will be out in full force to assist road users and to ensure safe passage along the route‚” he said.Shortly after 8am‚ the N3TC’s Twitter account - @N3Route - posted that 1360 vehicles were passing through the Mooi Plaza.This was up from 7am’s post: “Volumes picking up on the N (JHB bound) with just over 1000 vehicles through #MooiPlaza. Please share the road responsibly.”At 6am‚ it told Twitter user @AYUSHIE_R: “HI Ayushie‚ traffic is picking up rapidly on the JHB bound. There are however no incidents‚ traffic is free flowing.”Van Reenen’s Pass was highlighted as an area where heavier traffic volumes were likely to cause congestion at the Tugela Toll Plaza‚ especially if a traffic incident occurred.“Your patience would be appreciated if the Roads Traffic Inspectorate enforces lane closures at Tugela Toll Plaza to assist with traffic management through Van Reenen’s Pass” said Le Roux.“Every attempt will be made to keep traffic flowing and the closure of plaza lanes will be a last resort.
