Cope: Extra tuition needed to tackle youth joblessness

19 April 2016 - 14:59 By Kingdom Mabuza

The Congress of the People (Cope) said offering extra lessons to students will reverse the tide of unemployment affecting mainly black and coloured youths. Statistician-general Pali Lehohla revealed shocking findings of the 2009 to 2014 profile of youth survey on Monday. In the survey‚ unemployment among the youth increased from 34% in 2009 to 35% in 2014.It was also revealed that only 38% of youth have matric‚ 1% have a university degree and 4 % have a qualification other than a degree.Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem said his organisation believes that every school in every disadvantaged area should be offering afternoon and weekend classes."Furthermore‚ every school and college which has facilities for technical and vocational training‚ and which is easily accessible to young people from a disadvantaged area‚ should also offer afternoon and weekend classes to those who need to acquire knowledge and skills‚" said Bloem. He said for as long as Zuma and his oversized cabinet devote themselves to “bling”‚ the youth of our nation will remain serially neglected and jobless."This government doesn't care a damn about the poor of the country. The poor in our society are in a bad space 21 years into our new democracy.""Many black and coloured children are therefore hungry‚ directionless and discouraged. It is very sad that a black government is allowing this terrible situation to prevail‚" he said. – TMG Digital/TMG Local Government..
