A protest by students and members of staff at Rhodes University turned violent as protesters clashed with police.
The students are protesting over what they call a rape culture at Rhodes and are demanding the institution does more to support students who are victimised.
Vice-chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela appealed to police to release some of the protesters.
However some students believe that the police were there because Mabizela, university registrar Steve Fourie and Rhodes finance head Dr Iain L’Ange called them.
For the students who were in custody however, the event was traumatic whoever called the cops.
