A doctor doing his community service at the SA Army Infantry School in Oudtshoorn has been arrested for allegedly raping two female recruits in the sick bay.

The South African National Defence Force said the doctor allegedly committed the sexual assaults between April 18 and 21. He appeared in court in Oudtshoorn on Thursday and was granted bail.

An SANDF statement said: "He faces alleged charges of sexual assault‚ including rape‚ allegedly committed while he was conducting medical examinations on two new female recruits under the Military Skills Development System."

The statement said Department of Defence would launch an investigation alongside the police inquiry.

"The SANDF is cooperating with the investigations as any legally proven act of ill-discipline is not and will not be tolerated from any member in the employment of the SANDF regardless of their social standing and or appointment within the organisation‚" it said.
