More than 6‚000 Capetonians were affected by fires that damaged or destroyed their homes in the first quarter of 2016. Most of them - a total of 5‚913 - were residents of informal settlements‚ where 1‚718 homes were affected‚ according to the City of Cape Town disaster risk management department quarterly report.Ninety-five fires in formal settlements affected 378 people. The report‚ which will be considered by the safety and security portfolio committee on Thursday‚ also criticises the organisers of Tweede Nuwe Jaar minstrel events‚ saying they "can't keep to service agreements".It says there was insufficient security at the celebrations between January 1 and 3‚ adding: "Stabbings and crime were the order of the day."The report is critical too of the security arrangements at Cape Town Stadium for two matches involving Kaizer Chiefs‚ saying that on January 8 (against Ajax Cape Town) and February 20 (against SuperSport United)‚ there were problems with guards who were unable to keep aisles clear‚ intoxication and pitch invasions.- TMG Digital/The Times..
