The family of a Guatemalan businessman‚ who is accused of murdering a US marketing executive at a boutique hotel in Cape Town‚ apologised to her grieving father on Friday. They came face to face in the corridors of the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court where Diego Novella had hoped to apply for bail.Novella is facing a charge of murder in connection with the discovery of Gaby Alban‚ 39‚ in their room at the Camps Bay Retreat Hotel last year. She was allegedly partially covered in faeces. A white powdery substance was found in the hotel room.Novella’s younger brother‚ Lucas Dougherty‚ and other family members were in Cape Town to support him in court. Dougherty described the incident as a tragedy.“It was a big tragedy for both families‚” said Dougherty. “We hope that justice is done and that whatever the outcome‚ it is fair and best for the grieving family‚” he told TMG Digital.Dougherty and his nephew Javier Ocano relayed their condolences to Alban’s father‚ Howdy Kabrins‚ in the corridors of the court for the first time.“Excuse me sir‚ I just want to let you know from the bottom of my heart that I am sorry for your loss and you have my condolences‚” said Ocano.Dougherty said the families had not known each other. “Only the accused and the victim had a relationship but we didn’t have any kind of relationship with the family. It was not in my plans to stay until the end of the trial but I am not sure now. I will think about it.”Alban's family released a statement shortly after her death‚ describing her as “a loving‚ clean-living‚ smart‚ stylish and successful woman. She was a joy to her family and friends‚ all of whom will miss her grievously.”The bail application was postponed to May 19 because of difficulties in finding an interpreter.- TMG Digital/The Times..
