The Students Representative Council of the University of the Witwatersrand will on Friday hold a procession to “commemorate the lives of those lost” in an accident in Limpopo. “The university community is in mourning‚” said secretary-general Fasiha Hassan.“We have lost seven lives. Seven young and bright minds. We have lost future actuaries‚ future doctors‚ future teachers‚ future engineers‚ future lawyers. This is not just a loss felt by Wits‚ it is a loss felt by the country.”The seven students were killed when the taxi they were travelling in caught fire near the Nyl Plaza tollgate on the N1 freeway after hitting the trailer of an overturned truck on Sunday. They were heading back to Johannesburg from a Zion Christian Church pilgrimage they had attended in Moletjie‚ just outside Polokwane.Friday’s event – a “lead-up to the official memorial service next week”‚ said Hassan – starts at the at the Linder Auditorium at noon and will proceed to the stairs of the Great Hall‚ where the “pillars have been draped in black cloth to symbolise the dark cloud that has befallen us”.“Indeed it has been deeply saddening week.“Bring candles‚ flowers‚ letters/messages of support or anything you feel will assist in your grieving.”..
