Service delivery protesters block major Durban routes

Major traffic routes‚ including the N2 freeway and M19‚ were closed off to the public due to a number of service delivery protests on Monday in and around Durban. And in the chaos‚ a law enforcement officer was injured after falling off a bridge and down an embankment.Police spokesperson Major Shooz Magudulela said public order police were dispatched to three protests in the early hours of Monday.Durban’s two major routes‚ the N2 northbound near Lamontville and Umlazi and the M19 between Westville and uMngeni‚ interchange were closed.Protest action results in two collisions on the N2 near Lamontville in Durban https://t.co/FdmGI2GPrN@ER24EMSpic.twitter.com/HMx8utZ6Ry— Arrive Alive (@_ArriveAlive) May 16, 2016async Magudulela said police had used rubber bullets to disperse violent protesters.According to ER24‚ two people were injured during protest action in Lamontville.Paramedics had arrived on the scene after several vehicles had collided due to motorists trying to avoid burning rubble on the road.“One person sustained injuries and was treated on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital‚” ER24 said.While paramedics were busy with the first motor vehicle collusion‚ a secondary collision occurred where a law enforcement officer sustained injuries after jumping out of the way to avoid on coming traffic.“He fell off the side of the bridge and down an embankment and sustained injuries‚” ER24 said.Magudulela said the service delivery protest in Lamontville and Umlazi saw “about 200 protesters staging a protest on the N2 freeway around 2:30am‚ and started burning tyres and throwing stones at traffic and police vehicles”.“Police were forced to use rubber bullets in order to disperse the violent crowd‚" said Magudulela.Public order police were also dispatched to Kwadukuza‚ north of Durban‚ after about 200 people blockaded the R103 road with stones and burning tyres.Metro police spokesperson Sbonelo Mchunu said motorists are advised to use the M4 and N3 as alternative routes.“Protesters have not dispersed ‚ motorists are please advised to use others available routes‚” said Mchunu. – TMG Digital/Sunday Times..
