Harsh sentence handed down to corrupt police officer

A former police constable‚ Ashley Munnik‚ has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Bellville Specialised Commercial court for corrupt activities while he was stationed as a detective at the Athlone police station during 2014.

Munnik was convicted on Monday of ten counts of defeating the ends of justice and one count of fraud and sentence to five years each which will be served concurrently.

“He was investigated by the Western Cape Anti-Corruption unit for exhibits in drug related cases that went missing during his investigation thereof in November and December 2014 and was arrested on January 24‚ 2015‚” said Western Cape police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut.

 “The Western Cape police management is pleased with the outcome of the case and deemed the accused’s sentence as a deterrent for police officer who considered themselves above the law‚” Traut added.
