Life in the slow lane: island hunts for car mechanic with limited horizons

21 May 2016 - 15:22 By TMG Digital

If you're a car mechanic and fancy a part-time R48‚000-a-month job where the nearest city is Cape Town‚ this could be for you. But there's a catch: the vacancy is on Tristan da Cunha, an 11km-wide volcanic island. And if one of the 125 cars you'll be looking after needs a part‚ 2‚700km and a seven-day sea voyage will separate you from the Cape Town dealer who'll be supplying it.The tiny UK territory has just 275 residents and one "semi-paved" 5km road - grandly named the M1 - which connects "The Settlement" to the "Potato Patches".Island leaders have advertised the job on Tristan's website‚ saying the successful applicant will be based in the main settlement‚ Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Islanders call it The Settlement‚ as there is no other town or village on the island. The new mechanic may find the social scene somewhat lacking. Even tourism officer Dawn Repetto told MailOnline: "On Tristan you have to make your own entertainment."Spare-time activities include fishing‚ a Saturday night disco‚ golf‚ or a drink at the Albatross Bar‚ the island's only pub.The vacancy is said to suit a "retired or semi retired person"‚ who will be able to walk to their job in a "basic‚ dry covered workshop".The posting will last for 24 months‚ and as the harbour allows access to the island only 60 days of the year‚ opportunities to return to civilisation for the six-week annual leave period are limited.Local newsletter editor Richard Grundy said that those wishing to apply would be welcomed into a unique community.Appealing for applicants‚ he told MailOnline: "How would you like to live in a tiny village where everybody knows one another‚ everybody gets on‚ there is plentiful food‚ mainly grown or caught locally?"You can walk to work and your colleagues will be instantly your friends‚ who will invite you into their homes for meals and parties."Your skills will be precious to them and you will make a difference. So you will be valued. If you have these skills‚ want to work hard and‚ for a time be a part of this special community‚ go ahead and apply."According to Grundy‚ one factor which draws people to the island is "being far from the madding crowd‚ with no pollution‚ crime or urban stress"'.The island's oldest inhabitant‚ Ellen Rogers‚ is 97‚ and the youngest‚ Holly Rogers‚ was born in September 2015.The island has only ever had one traffic jam - when a disaster management exercise saw the population of The Settlement evacuated to the Potato Patches in 2011. The average annual temperature is only 15C‚ and more than half the islands suffer from partial asthma.TMG Digital/The Times..
